For this class project we were charged with creating a packaging for a premium box set for a piece of media. I choose to do my project on the collected works in Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The media that would be included was the original radio stories, all five books in the trilogy (plus the sixth written by Eoin Colfer), the text adventure game written by Adams, the Star Ship Titanic point and click adventure, the BBC television show, and the 2005 movie.
I wanted the packaging to be "in universe," with the backstory being that the publisher of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the book in the book) was asking you to take on the position of researcher for The Guide. To this end the exterior of the packaging looks like a cardboard shipping box. Because it is being shipped across the galaxy it is covered with postage. For the construction of the box I wanted something that was recognizable as a shipping box, but a little bit off from the everyday objects we see on earth. Inside is a USB drive with the media on it, inside a box designed to look like the Babel Fish (a universal translator) from the book. The package also contains a letter from the publishing corporation, a reference book, and a number items recognizable from the series.
